If ValiChord fails, it won’t fail technically. It will fail by being slowly domesticated until it becomes a compliance artifact rather than an epistemic one — a well-governed registry of polite uncertainty that never actually says anything uncomfortable.
Every reproducibility system faces pressure to soften its findings. Institutions want clean metrics. Funders want simple scores. High-status researchers want their work validated, not questioned. The natural trajectory is toward a system that looks rigorous but never produces an uncomfortable result.
ValiChord resists this through what the project calls Epistemic Integrity Commitments — principles that are designed into the system architecture, not just written into policy documents.
No single institution, funder, or validator cohort can control outcomes. This is achieved through credentialed membranes (only institutionally verified validators can participate), immutable public records on the DHT (cannot be altered or deleted by anyone, including ValiChord’s own operators), distributed governance (no central server, no single point of control), and transparent disagreement (where validators diverge, the disagreement is recorded in full).
The governance framework includes specific “red lines” — things that cannot be conceded regardless of who asks — and worked scripts for negotiations with funders and institutions who push for softening. This is not paranoia; it is recognition that every previous reproducibility initiative has been domesticated by exactly these pressures.
